Here’s a super simple fighting technique that really works in a wide variety of situations. If you’re ever attacked and can do this move, you’re a little safer than you were before.
Over the years, I’ve been asked to train security guards in self-defence due to my background in both combat sports and security. If you ask instructors from 5 different martial arts styles for a great self-defence move to deal with a common attack, you’ll get 5 different answers.
There are many reasons why and the reasons vary. These can be stylistic or due to practical considerations. You’ll hear many instructors teach things like not getting into a fighting stance, using palms instead of fists, etc. These all have valid theories behind them and I’m not putting them down at all. I just have a slightly different approach based on my personal experience and training.
When we consider variables like weapons, multiple attackers etc, just about anything can happen. Years of intensive combat training are ideal but most people are just looking for a basic starting point or ‘go to’ move. Here’s a technique that has worked well for me in the cage. It’s super basic to do and was one of the first things I learned in MMA. It’s very applicable to the street.
I’m a big believer in basic techniques as when you’re extremely stressed, fine motor skills go out the window. This is a basic block and punch combo that can be easily adapted for different situations such as Krav Maga style knife defence, etc. It’s a super simple technique used commonly in Muay Thai and Boxing that’s easy to learn and really works.
This video shows the technique as demonstrated by former North American Muay Thai Champion Mike Zhang. Clearly it’s super effective on attackers sporting crazy, blow dried hair.
