The curse of concealed carry and why I need another gun.

I’m sitting here on holiday in Port Edward looking out at the most beautiful ocean and I find myself feeling a bit frustrated.  After carrying a gun 7 days a week for nearly 4 years, I don’t have one on me. It’s a frustrating thing but my dear wife went and booked accommodation for us at a place without a safe. Actually, the place we’re staying at now has a safe but the one we stayed at last week did not.

It left me in a bit of a pickle. I didn’t want to leave my gun in the car or the flat while I went to the beach. I had to make a decision and I decided that security is not about having a gun, rather it’s about planning  and awareness etc, blah blah blah. At any rate, I’m not at work and will not have to respond to any suspicious activity so I don’t need a gun on holiday. I will try to be a ‘normal’ person while on holiday. So now I’m stuck here with nothing but a knife if things go pear shaped.

Anyway, it is what it is, so here I sit without my gun. The one thing that is awesome, is that I’m able to go out in a vest and shorts to soak up some sun. It sounds funny but when I’m in Jo’burg, I never do this anymore as I’m always worried about printing or bending over or sitting and have people spotting my gun. So in summer, I end up going with a Hawaiian style shirt over my vest so that I can remain concealed but still draw quickly.

I didn’t realise how much I miss simply not having to conceal a firearm. I think I’m going to try pocket carry when I get home but the only trouble is that I have a Glock 19 and while it’s not a large gun, the back is still visible in a pair of shorts. I do need to check the law as technically, I’m not sure if pocket carry is legal. I expect it is, as I would secure my gun in my ‘Remora’ holster inside my pocket.

I guess the only solution to stop the gun showing is to buy a teeny weeny little gun so I can chill at a braai in a vest or T shirt without having to worry about concealment. I’m thinking either something practical in 9mm like a Glock 26 or perhaps a little snub nose revolver so that I can feel like dirty harry.

I’m sure my Mrs will be just thrilled if I arrive home with another gun.
